Privacy rulesPrivacy is a very wide term. The interpretation differs from culture to culture and from individual to individual. The degree in which personal data are sensitive, and consequently should be protected, is therefore subjective. A real definition with respect to privacy is extremely difficult to formulate. Consequently, our legislation has chosen to protect personal data with utmost care. The basics are being ruled by the Law of 1992 with respect to the Protection of the Personal Life Environment when processing personal data (i.e., the Privacy Law) modified by the Law of 11 December 1998 and transposed in the directive 95/46/EG of 24 October 1995 of the European Parliament and the Council concerning protection of natural persons With respect to the processing of personal data and the free movement of those data (Belgian Bulletin of Acts, Orders and Decrees of 3 February 1999, p. 3049 e.s.). This law stipulates the legal framework for guaranteeing the protection of privacy data. Good to know: only data of natural persons are protected. Legal persons, say organizations, have no legal protection.
